There are two things that have always haunted me: the brutality of the European traders and the stories I've heard about Africans selling other Africans into slavery.

Patriotism is best exemplified through auto-critique.
Interpretation
Patriotism involves the ability to reflect critically on one's own country.
Henry Louis Gates highlights the idea that true patriotism is not blind loyalty but rather the capacity to engage in self-reflection and critique. This auto-critique allows citizens to recognize their nation's shortcomings and strive for improvement, ultimately fostering a healthier and more genuine form of national pride.
In practice
In a discussion about civic responsibility, one might quote this to emphasize the importance of questioning government actions.
There are two things that have always haunted me: the brutality of the European traders and the stories I've heard about Africans selling other Africans into slavery.
It's not white versus black any more, it's haves versus have-nots. Unless the black middle-classes unite to promote the interests of the black underclass, tension between them is inevitable. What we, the black middle class have to do, is think of a strategy to avert that.
In America there is institutional racism that we all inherit and participate in, like breathing the air in this room - and we have to become sensitive to it.
In fact, the class divide in the black community is now seen by some as a permanent aspect of our existence.
The historical basis for the gap between the black middle class and underclass shows that ending discrimination, by itself, would not eradicate black poverty and dysfunction. We also need intervention to promulgate a middle-class ethic of success among the poor, while expanding opportunities for economic betterment.
The only people who live in a post-black world are four people who live in a little white house on Pennsylvania Avenue. The idea that America is post-racial or post-black because a man I admire, Barack Obama, is president of the United States, is a joke. And I hope no one will even wonder about this crazy fiction again.
By liberty of conscience, we understand not only a mere liberty of the mind, in believing or disbelieving this or that principle or doctrine; but the exercise of ourselves in a visible way of worship, upon our believing it to be indispensably required at our hands, that if we neglect it for fear of favor of any mortal man, we sin and incur divine wrath.
In analysing history do not be too profound, for often the causes are quite superficial.
But what we can do, as flawed as we are, is still see God in other people, and do our best to help them find their own grace. That's what I strive to do, that's what I pray to do every day.
We live in a spiritual Universe. God is in, through, around and for us.
Only faith in Christ gives rise to a culture contrary to egotism and death.
...Genuine pathological openness is about as seductive as Tourette's Syndrome.
