In this quote, Thomas Merton conveys a deep yearning for the presence of Christ in our earthly lives. He recognizes the struggles of existence and the feeling of being lost or in exile, and he implores for a manifestation of the divine that can help guide and comfort us in our current state, rather than only in a distant future or afterlife.

The devil is no fool. He can get people feeling about heaven the way they ought to feel about hell. He can make them fear the means of grace the way they do not fear sin. And he does so, not by light but by obscurity, not by realities but by shadows; not by clarity and substance, but by dreams and the creatures of psychosis. And men are so poor in intellect that a few cold chills down their spine will be enough to keep them from ever finding out the truth about anything.

While all societies make their own imaginaries (institutions, laws, traditions, beliefs and behaviors), autonomous societies are those that their members are aware of this fact, and explicitly self-institute (αυτο-νομούνται).
