Raymond Chandler highlights the disparity between how things look and their actual value. Despite having the most beautiful kitchens and bathrooms, the average person is unable to create meaningful meals, and these aesthetically pleasing spaces are filled with superficial products that don't enrich human experience. This reflects a broader commentary on consumer culture and the obsession with outward appearances at the expense of genuine quality.
