I think what gets a poem going is an initiating line. Sometimes a first line will occur, and it goes nowhere; but other times - and this, I think, is a sense you develop - I can tell that the line wants to continue.

I sit in the dark and wait for a little flame to appear at the end of my pencil.
Interpretation
This quote reflects the patience and anticipation of a writer as they seek inspiration to create.
In this quote, Billy Collins expresses the quiet and often solitary experience of writing. The 'dark' symbolizes uncertainty and the struggle for creativity, while the 'little flame' represents inspiration, the spark that ignites the writing process. It highlights the unique relationship between the writer and their craft, where the act of waiting can be as important as the act of creation itself.
In practice
This quote can be shared during a creative writing workshop to encourage participants to embrace the creative process.

The whole world of publishing is moving to electronic, but when you put a poem on a screen and you increase the type size, the shape of a poem changes.
For me, the original play becomes an historical document: This is where I was when I wrote it, and I have to move on now to something else.
Gardening is a luxury occupation: an ornament, not a necessity, of life.... Fortunate gardener, who may preoccupy himself solely with beauty in these difficult and ugly days! He is one of the few people left in this distressful world to carry on the tradition of elegance and charm. A useless member of society, considered in terms of economics, he must not be denied his rightful place. He deserves to share it, however humbly, with the painter and poet.
My dread is for my show to be a nostalgia act. So the key to it is how do we keep it fresh?
Dress designing, incidentally, is to me not a profession but an art.
The sun had gone down behind the tall apartments of the movie stars in the West Fifties, and the unclear voices of children, already gathered like crikets on the grass, rose through the hot twilight.
